“You have hedged me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me” (Psalm 139:5)
When I think about this scripture, it brings me so much peace. It reminds me that no matter what I’m facing, the hand of Almighty God is upon me.
At first when I read this scripture, for some reason I envisioned God’s hand solely on top of our head. There is a lot of power in that thought, but now I believe it goes so much deeper. To lay means His hand rests on you. It will not move. And His hand is not just on your head, it’s on all of you – your entire being. Every aspect of you: mind, body, soul, and spirit – God’s hand is resting on. You are completely covered. And notice the word “laid” is in past tense. Because God exists in eternity, it means God laid His hand on you before you were even formed in your mother’s womb. (see Jeremiah 1:5)
This amazing verse also says God has hedged us behind and before. To be “hedged” means to be enclosed, completely surrounded. When you’re hedged, there is no space between you and what’s hedging you in. There are no gaps that can compromise your protection. Not only has God hedged us in from behind, but He’s also hedged us in the front. He’s got us covered from the back to the front. We are protected from things we can’t see coming at us from behind, and from things that are waiting for us up ahead. No weapon formed against us shall prosper! (Isaiah 54:17)
I pray this truth settles in your spirit today and brings you comfort and peace. No matter what you’re going through, be encouraged – you are covered!
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your supernatural and divine protection, and for Your hand that covers us in all that we do. We thank You that we walk in peace as we meditate on Your word, in Jesus’ name. Amen
