“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Psalm 32:8)
One of my favorite scriptures is Psalm 32:8. It literally is a promise from God that gives me reassurance whenever I feel lost, disappointed, or unsure of my future. There have been so many times when I feel ready to go on to the next level of my life, and can even see glimpses of it, but my current reality didn’t line up with it. My spirit was already at the gate, ready to burst out sprinting, but God was saying “not yet”. These moments are extremely frustrating, and has caused me many times to cry out to God: “When?” That’s when He takes me back to this scripture, gently and lovingly reminding me He is in control and everything is going to be okay. One day, He spoke this to me: “you’ll know, then go, then flow”.
I believe there’s a reason why God gave me the words in that order. We mustn’t ‘go’ before we ‘know’ we’ve heard from Him. If you move prematurely, you could miss God’s timing and be out of alignment – out of His ‘flow’.
You’ll Know
When it’s time to move on to the next level, God will give you instruction or a prompting in your spirit. It may even be one single word. But you’ll have an inner knowing that it’s time. It’s all divine revelation coming straight from Him. Sometimes before you know, you may first notice a shifting happen in your life. Relationships, jobs, and other aspects of your life may change. On the other hand, these shifts could also be confirmation of what God has already spoken to you.
Despite knowing and sensing you’re hearing from God, the enemy may try to attack your mind with thoughts of fear. These thoughts are sent to confuse you and stop you from the next phase that must happen on your purpose path.
You’ll Go
When you know you’ve heard from God, you must take action and go. You have to move and take that step of faith. In Psalm 32:8, God says He will instruct and teach you in the way you should go. There’s no getting around this truth: you must go forward. It may require you to leave your comfort zone, but if you stay, you could miss out on opportunities connected to your destiny. As you begin to move, God will order (or erect) each step ahead of you. He’s also promised to go before you and make the crooked paths straight. But God can’t move until you move first. Your faith must be put into action.
You’ll Flow
As you take that first (and often scary) step, God will meet you and guide you along the way. You’ll feel a sense of ease and effortlessness. There will be a calmness and peace in your spirit. You are in alignment with God’s plan for your life. You are in His flow. Even if you experience challenges, you know that it will all work out for your good. As you flow, God will continue to unfold your destiny. Isaiah 30:21 is another reassuring promise from God: “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it’, whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.”
Peter’s story in Matthew 14: 25-32 is a great example of knowing, going, and flowing. Jesus appeared to the disciples by walking on the sea in the middle of a storm. They were afraid, thinking they were seeing a ghost. When Jesus reassured them that it was really Him, Peter said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water”. Jesus said “Come”, which gave Peter confirmation, or a knowing, that it was Jesus. Peter then went from knowing, to going. He moved in faith and got out of the boat. Then he went from going to flowing. Though only for a moment, he actually walked on water! As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was flowing and operating in the power of God.
The same is true for us. It’s only when we become distracted and take our eyes off of Him that we begin to slip out of the flow. But just as Jesus reached out His hand to catch Peter as he was sinking, Jesus will catch us too, and bring us back into the flow, or back into alignment with Him.
Think back on how God has moved in your life. Have you had the ‘know’, ‘go’, flow’ experience?
Heavenly Father, thank You for keeping Your hand on our lives. You are the Master Strategist, and we trust and believe that You have good things in store for us as we stand on Your promises, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
