There is a tree outside of my window, and I’ve been observing it since we moved into our apartment about 14 months ago. I’ve watched it endure strong winds and heavy downpours of rain, bending and standing up straight again. Despite the external conditions that came against it, the tree thrived and grew. Several inches. It’s now taller than our apartment building.
Watching this tree over time made me a little curious, so I did some research and discovered some trees have taproots. A taproot is the large primary root that grows deep down into the earth and anchors the tree. It’s what helps to keep the tree from falling when the wind comes. The taproot is the main source of nutrition that absorbs water and minerals from the soil, carrying nutrients all the way up the tree to every branch and leaf. The deeper the root, the higher the tree grows. After learning this, I saw a parallel on how this can also be true in the spiritual sense.
Scripture has many verses comparing us to trees. Jeremiah 17:8 and Psalm 1:3 says we shall be Iike a tree planted by the waters. Colossians 2:7 goes further to say we should be rooted and built up in Christ. Jesus is the source of our life and the anchor of our soul. He gives us everything we need that pertains to life and godliness. The deeper we are in Him, the higher we will grow and be built up in Him. But to be deeply rooted requires patience and takes time. It cannot happen overnight. And what is seen above-ground is determined by what is actually happening beneath it. If your roots are healthy and strong, it will be evident in your life – in your heart.
Tree roots are so strong, they push through the soil as they grow. They can push up concrete and asphalt. Have you ever noticed bumps in the street next to trees, or seen sidewalks cracked and pushed up? That’s how strong a healthy root is. They are not affected by the “limiting” circumstances around them. They are strong enough to push through it and continue to grow.
Our spiritual roots should be the same. To grow deep, healthy roots we must continually feed, water, and nurture ourselves with God’s word. We must stay in His presence through praise and worship. When we do, God will make sure our leaves remain green and not wither, and that we produce fruit in every season.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your patience as You develop deep roots in us. Thank You for building us up in You, and establishing our hearts. Draw us closer to You every day by Your Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
